The Fraser River Canyon posed a major transportation obstacle. The gold rush of the 1850's increased the need for a safe river crossing. In 1863 the first Alexandra Bridge was completed. After the Canadian Pacific Railway line was completed through the canyon the bridge and the Cariboo Wagon Road fell into disrepair. In the early 1920's the popularity of the automobile necessitated a new suspension bridge be constructed. This bridge was completed in 1926 and was in service until a new one was constructed downriver in 1962. The Alexandra Bridge Provincial Park now protects a part of the old Cariboo Wagon Road and the Alexandra Bridge.
